Bundoran in County Donegal is known as one of Ireland's most popular seaside resorts. Originally two separate villages, Bundoran became more known and popular for holiday makers after the opening of the Railway Station in 1866. The improved transportation networks offered convenient access from East to West and gave a lift to Bundoran's new image as the top Irish holiday destination. The Railway Station closed in 1957 but the holidaymakers still find their way to Donegal's holiday spot. More recent development of hotels, holiday homes and entertainment like the Waterwold complex, however, helped Bundoran earn it's Lonely Planet mention as one of the tackiest holiday resorts in Ireland. While you could argue about the lost charm, one thing is sure; walking along Bundoran's main street with its amusement arcades, fast food restaurants and fairgrounds at a distance, you are swept back in time by 20-30 years and can taste that melting 99 ice cream cone on your tongue.
Surfing has brought a new aspect to the buzzing seaside town and Bundoran is now known as one of Ireland's best surfing destinations. With ISA approved surfing schools, long beach breaks and world class reef breaks at your doorstep, Bundoran is definitely worth a visit (or two, or three...). Surf rental is also not a problem, with several surf schools offering cheap and flexible rental options. Tullan Strand and The Peak are both within very easy access and sampling different spots is convenient with both Rosnowlagh and Mullaghmore only a short drive away. After a day out in the refreshing Atlantic ocean, Maddens Bridge Bar with views of The Peak is the ideal wind down for a pint of Guinness and hearty pub food.
If the swell is not in your favour, there are several other activities on offer. You can try your skills at kayaking or blokarting or if dry land is what you're looking for, hiking trails, bicycle routes, golf and the surrounding scenery with its mountains, caves and sandy beaches certainly has something to offer for everyone. For the rainy days the seaweed baths and massages in Waterworld are a relaxing alternative. Bundoran also has some appealing events if you still have energy after all the adventures. The annual Sea Sessions in June is a surfer friendly festival with a good line up of Irish and international music acts. There are also regular music, pool and ballroom events for the more traditional flavour.
Bundoran has possibly Donegal's widest accommodation selection. You can find yourself a quality hotel room or a friendly B&B or stay with one of the surf schools or hostels and mix with other travelers and surfers. If you are traveling in a group, booking one of the many holiday homes is a great option and you can find availability with the owners and managing companies directly or enquire at one of the surf shops in town. Bundoran is only a 3 hour drive from Dublin and is therefore also a convenient weekend trip location.
