Brandon Bay on the northern side of Dingle Peninsula is a top class surfing and windsurfing destination. The bay itself is on the Maharees peninsula (or ayre) and hosts several spots with slight conditional twists. On the other side of the small peninsula there are further beaches. Scraggane Bay at the top of the peninsula is a haven for windsurfers, while Brandon Bay and the adjoining spots along the west side offer great conditions to surfers and kitesurfers of all abilities as well as a challenge to windsurfers. Experienced surfers (and we mean experienced), will find sizable reef breaks towards the top of the bay, while the long sandy beach covers several spots from Dumps all the way to Fermoyle, changing slightly in the shape and wind direction. Therefore you should be able to find surf with most conditions. On the eastern side of the small peninsula there are yet more surfing locations. Sandy Bay also offers an ideal and safe setting for beginner windsurfers.
In stormy conditions you get unbelievably strong winds. In high tide, caution must also be taken in and out of water as the waves reach the rocks by the dunes. If the conditions are not ideal and you are traveling by car, you can also check Banna Beach or the lovely Inch beach and reef across the mountain.
The area is popular also with holidaying surfers and kitesurfers, who sometimes drive all the way from central Europe to experience these waters. There is limited accommodation locally and you might find it best to drive and rent one of the near by holiday homes. Roads can be narrow and you never know when that tractor is going to appear from around the bend, so take caution when you drive. With over 4 hours drive Dingle area is further away from the Dublin, so if you are heading for a weekend it might be best to make it a long weekend (although the motorway now takes you from Dublin straight past Limerick, making the trip faster and hassle free). But once you're there you'll be glad you came as the scenery and the surf are fantastic.
The village of Castlegregory has a shop and all necessary amenities and Jamie Knox Watersports a few hundred meters from the beach offers lessons and rental. There are also other vendors operating in the area. For anything else, Tralee is a short drive away and has big supermarkets and cinemas for all your needs.
